About The Urbanite Home range
Each day millions of oil barrels are created worldwide, for use in different industrial sectors ranging from petrochemicals to food, of which thousands are discarded every day. These metal barrels have very little scrap value, and are costly for industries to recycle; so the majority are disposed of into general waste and end up in landfill sites, causing pollution and environmental and health hazards.
The Urbanite Home collection contributes to the resolution of this issue by recycling those barrels into exquisite modern furniture that sits on the fine line betwee
n art and design; giving industrial waste a second life, and injecting life into our environment, both literally and aesthetically.
Our furniture is made by cutting, welding and riveting oil barrels by hand, whilst maintaining the unique identity each barrel would have acquired from its service history. With their rough-and-ready features, it is not difficult to imagine the barrels’ previous lives spent travelling the high seas, being left outside in the rain, and getting a few knocks while being transported along bumpy roads in far away lands.
Our furniture can be used both indoors and outdoors as it is lacquered/powder coated, which protects it from rust. It can also be fabricated to individual customer specifications in relation to colour and size.
Designed for durability, visual impact, to raise awareness and encourage action on repurposing and recycling, the collection is sure to make an impression whether they’re featured in a garden or in a postmodern interior space.
Our range allows individuals to express their eco-consciousness and artistic flair from the comfort of their very homes.
We are also a member of ACID (Anti Copying in Design), a membership trade organisation of designers committed to upholding the value of original design.
